IOA Group takes the lead with DES adoption
LONDON (3 November) The IOA Group has registered a major industry first in the battle against machine fraud.

The national operator, which became the first to adopt Data Encryption Standards (DES), a software breakthrough developed by IBM and used by the US military, organised a special DES Day in order to create a better awareness of the system which delivers a high level of intelligent coding between the coin mech, the hopper, note acceptor and note recycler and is the most sophisticated anti-fraud system available to the gaming industry.
Organised by Kevin Astley, Group Service Manager at Bob Rudd Leisure, the DES Day featured representatives from JCM, MES, MEI, Innovative Technology, Money Controls and Bell-Fruit in addition to representatives of the IOA Group’s front line staff comprising engineers, service managers and supervisors.
Explaining the purpose and value of the event Kevin Astley said: “The IOA has made a huge commitment to implement DES wherever it is possible and as with any product it’s essential to fully understand it in order to diagnose and repair the hardware running it. This is even more relevant to DES which represents a highly sophisticated system which changes coding every 24-hours in order to keep ahead of the most committed fraudsters. The DES Day brought all manufacturers together under one roof – quite an event within our industry – and proved to be a highly successful arena in which we were able to share the group’s knowledge, insight and expertise.
“I believe the IOA Group is firmly in the driving seat in relation to combating machine fraud and we embrace the introduction of DES to aid in this most important process. All of the manufacturers made excellent presentations which were much appreciated by myself and all members of the IOA Group who were in attendance. I would like to give special thanks to Mick Johnson and Bell Fruit for allowing us to use their excellent facilities and making us feel so welcome.”
